INTRODUCTION:PROTOTYPE MODEL
Centrepiece of the modelling and analysis project will be
the development of a prototype ocean simulation for the Australasian
region.
"An ocean forecast requires the ability to synthesise
information from satellite, shipboard, mooring and floating
instruments using computer-based ocean models," said
Dr Schiller, from CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research.
"We want to be in a position to provide marine-based
industries with a forecast of ocean conditions in the same
way and with a similar level of accuracy as the 4-5 day atmospheric
forecasts Australians now see every day.
"Operational oceanography for defence applications and
industries such as commercial fishing, oil and gas, shipping
and transport, search and rescue and ecosystem management
is approaching an equivalent point in the 1950s where
operational meteorology took a big jump forward," Dr
Schiller said.
