Distribution Types

Introduced into Australia/non-native

This describes species that have been transported by human activities, intentionally or unintentionally, into a region in which they did not occur in historical time and are now reproducing in the wild.

Possibly introduced into Australia/cryptogenic

This describes a species with an unclear or unknown ‘native/non-native’ status. This uncertainty can originate from simply a lack of knowledge of or research on the particular species, as well as numerous human errors such as: taxonomic misidentifications; taxonomic uncertainty for little studied groups; poorly recorded distributional data; or misplaced museum specimens.
