A Joint Initiative
Data Trawler is a Java application that has been developed under the auspices of the North West Shelf Joint Environmental Management Project (NWS JEMS) and the CSIRO Marine Research (CMR) Data Centre. The Data Trawler application accesses data in the CMR Data Warehouse - which is an Oracle data repository.
Secure Access
The application's function is to allow users on-line access to data collected by CMR research scientists and other data held by CMR that has been obtained in collaborative research. In cases where the Warehouse contains data originating outside of CMR we only provide access to these data if the appropriate security clearance has been obtained. To get the full benefit out of using the application a user is therefore required to provide an email address (a logon) and a password. If you are not a CMR staff member or other authorised user you will be allowed access to the Warehouse as a "Public User". Public users have only limited access to Warehouse content.
For CSIRO Marine Research staff and others to discuss access permissions, please contact: marine-trawler@csiro.au.
Functionality
This is release 1 of the Data Trawler application. Its primary functions are to allow users to:
Discover
Discover data of interest using geographic, temporal and data category search criteria.
Investigate
View a brief summary of any data sets returned which meet the search criteria and display their spatial distribution.
Download
Place desired datasets into a data "shopping basket" and then download them to your local computer.
Currently Available Data
Datasets which are currently available from the Data Warehouse via Data Trawler include:
- CTD data from Divisional research vessels, covering the North West Shelf region and other ocean areas,
- Hydrological (bottle sample) data from Divisional research vessels, covering the North West Shelf region and other ocean areas,
- Biological (Catch) data from Divisional research vessels, and other sources as presently held in the Division's archive (e.g. Soviet fishery data from the 1960s and 1970s), covering the North West Shelf region and other ocean areas,
- GIS layers covering a range of themes obtained from WA agencies and Industry for use in the NWS-JEMS project, mainly covering the North West Shelf region,
- Moored instrument data from CMR research deployments depicting currents for various ocean regions.
- Model data from selected model runs undertaken by CMR NWS JEMS scientists.
Future Enhancements
The Warehouse will be continuously updated with data originating from CMR research projects. Some of this data will be available to the public and some will only be accessible to CMR scientists and their collaborators.
All registered users will be notified of application upgrades as and when they are released.
