Interim Marine Bioregionalisation for Australia

Towards a National System of Marine Protected Areas

Property vs Property Plots

There is often a great deal of oceanographic and biologically significance in the ratio of one proper to another. Plots of temperature versus salinity and nitrate versus silicate are provided as an adjunct to the proceding group propery plots. These especially reveal the uniformity of upper-ocean properties south of Australia and the divergence of those properties between the waters east and west of Australia. The group colours are the same as those used in the corresponding physical regionalisation maps.

Note that the properties shown are those of the property map grid points, not the original oceanographic cast data. The mapping necessarily imparts a smoothing, especially in data poor regions. This, together with the regular spatial distribution of the grid points, explains why the plotted points usually form into curves rather than being more randomly scattered.
