Abstract :
Warning:
It has been discovered that the Underway Thermosalinograph data (UWY TSG) collected on voyage SS2/2008 is about 0.05 PSU higher than the CTD surface salinity values (at each station) till station 21 at 03:50 on 18 Feb 2008. Thereafter, the UWY TSG values range from 0.06 ~ 0.08 PSU above the CTD surface values.
The data will be reviewed, and this record updated as soon as possible.
This dataset contains the Underway (UWY) data collected on Southern Surveyor voyage SS 02/2008. The voyage took place off the Bonney Coast and Kangaroo Island, South Australia from 4 - 26 February 2008. This dataset has been processed and archived within the CSIRO Marine Research Data Centre in Hobart. Additional information regarding this dataset may be contained in the voyage plan and voyage summary (as available).
The standard Underway (=continuously recorded) dataset from a research voyage includes Navigation (NAV), Sounder, Thermosalinograph (TSG) and Meteorological (MET) data. NAV data includes GPS (Global Positioning System) measurements of latitude, longitude, ship's direction and speed. MET data includes atmospheric temperature, humidity and pressure, wind speed and direction, and incident radiation intensity. Data are recorded at 10 second intervals.

Project Description
-
Led by Dr David Currie, this subprogram conducts ecological studies on hard and soft substrate communities, particularly the population and community organisation of benthic fauna, and trophic relationships between benthos and demersal fish. Recent studies have included an assessment of benthic assemblage structure in the Great Australian Bight Marine Park. This subprogram also develops research and provides scientific advice on the sustainable management of South Australia¿s Giant Crab (Pseudocarcinus gigas) and Blue Swimmer Crab (Portunus pelagicus) fisheries.

Voyage/Survey Description
-
The role of submarine canyons in upwelling, sediment transport, and productivity hotspots off the Bonney Coast and Kangaroo Islands, South Australia.
Voyage Objectives
Upwelling will occur within canyons that are exposed to westward slope currents and be largest where ware core eddies are found. Two canyon systems that periodically exhibit upwelling will be surveyed during the voyage. an unnamed canyon system off the Bonney Coast is our principal area of interest, and will be surveyed first, but if time permits, a second canyon system, off the southeast tip of Kangaroo Island, will also be surveyed. The first two weeks in February is generally a period of coastal upwelling so it is also likely that such an event will be captured during the cruise but this is not essential to the canyon study. A broad-scale mapping survey suing swath, acoustics and ADCP will be conducted at each target area to obtain high-resolution bathymetry and a synoptic picture of the canyon and coastal upwelling. Following the mapping a series of transects along and to each side of the canyon axis will be established. Stations occupied along transects will be sampled with a CTD, lowered ADCP, grab, dredge and trawl.

Position (latitude and longitude); meteorological data (air temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, maximum wind gust, light and atmospheric pressure) and thermosalinograph (salinity and water temperature) data and depth data were evaluated and quality controlled.
Salinity and Water temperature data were rejected when the pump was turned off. 23:17:50 05-Feb-2008 ¿ 06:54:30 06-Feb-2008.
The depth data was re picked using Sonar Data¿s echoview software.
