Abstract :
Warning NOTE:
It has been discovered that the Underway Thermosalinograph data (UWY TSG) collected on voyage SS2/2008 is about 0.05 PSU higher than the CTD surface salinity values (at each station) till station 21 at 03:50 on 18 Feb 2008. Thereafter, the UWY TSG values range from 0.06 ~ 0.08 PSU above the CTD surface values.
This higher than usual anomaly continues until the end of voyage SS200803.
Bernadette Heaney will process the UWY data for the voyages SS200804 to present first, then review the data for SS200802 and SS200803.
This dataset contains the Underway (UWY) data collected on Southern Surveyor voyage SS 03/2008. The voyage took place in the eastern Great Australian Bight (~134°E), and at selected sites on the continental slope on the transit back to Hobart via the west coast of Tasmania, 28th February - 17 March 2008. This dataset has been processed and archived within the CSIRO Marine Research Data Centre in Hobart. Additional information regarding this dataset may be contained in the voyage plan and voyage summary (as available).
The standard Underway (=continuously recorded) dataset from a research voyage includes Navigation (NAV), Sounder, Thermosalinograph (TSG) and Meteorological (MET) data. NAV data includes GPS (Global Positioning System) measurements of latitude, longitude, ship's direction and speed. MET data includes atmospheric temperature, humidity and pressure, wind speed and direction, and incident radiation intensity. Data are recorded at 10 second intervals.

Project Description
-
Core business for the SFG in the areas of Sustainable Fisheries and Sustainable Ecosystems is the need to provide information to enable sustainable management of fishery ecosystems, including their users. This project will provide biological synopses of key species, identify critical habitats of key species in the South East Fishery, and add vital information on habitat vulnerability to an existing database of habitats distributions that together will underpin a program of spatial management planned for the fishery by AFMA through fishery legislation and EA through a system of MPAs. The outputs from this project will also contribute to directly to other CMR projects in SESME and NESD to map and manage the habitats of offshore benthic fishery ecosystems for the development of Regional Management Planning under Oceans Policy.

Voyage/Survey Description
-
Title: "Estimating the effectiveness of spatial closures for deepwater gulper sharks and associated fishery species"
Scientific Objectives
Areas of seabed in Commonwealth waters off temperate Australia are being closed to fishing as marine reserves are developed by the DEHA, and as spatial closures are increasingly used by AFMA to manage fishery stocks. One current focus for both conservation and fishery closures is the protection of gulper sharks which are under consideration for endangered species listing. Other species and habitats................
Voyage Objectives
1. Map and characterize the benthic ecosystem of the ¿60-mile closure¿ in the GAB using the EM300 multibeam and quantitative towed camera surveys
2. Quantify the abundance of gulper sharks and associated species, inside and outside the closure by non-extractive quantitative towed camera surveys.
3. Estimate species relative abundances inside and outside the ¿60-mile closure¿ using non-extractive underwater baited video cameras (BRUVs).
4. Assess the survivorship by gulper sharks and other species following tagging. This will use a specially designed trap with (1) a surveillance camera to monitor behaviour during descent, on the bottom, and during ascent, and (2) an acoustic receiver to track fish movements away from the trap after release.
5. Evaluate movement in and out of the ¿60-mile closure¿ using two curtains of acoustic VR2 listening stations to detect fish tagged with acoustic V16 tags.
6. Acquire additional deepwater camera calibration data with scalebar and rotating 16-laser array......

TSG values range from 0.06 ~ 0.08 PSU above the CTD surface values.
This higher than usual anomaly continues until the end of voyage SS200803. This problem will be addressed as soon as possible.
Position (latitude and longitude); meteorological data (air temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, maximum wind gust, light and atmospheric pressure) and thermosalinograph (salinity and water temperature) data and depth data were evaluated and quality controlled.
There is a gap in the data due to a power outage, 10-Mar-2008 18:36 ¿ 21:14.
A spike in the salinity data was removed 04-Mar-2008 11:20:20.
Salinity and Water temperature data were rejected when the instrument had a problem with tsg comms after a power outage.
10-Mar-2008 17:18:40 ¿ 14-Mar-2008 04:38:40
The depth data was re picked using Sonar Data¿s echoview software.
