Applying for Sea Time

RV Southern Surveyor

A call for applications is made for voyages two years in advance. The process involves three steps with voyage participants knowing 12 months in advance if they have been successful.

Initially there is a call for Pre-proposals and Applications for sea time in July.

Those considering a voyage have a month to submit a pre-proposal which is a brief description of what is being proposed. The pre-proposals are then sent out to all the applicants to allow them to see what others are proposing and to identify whether there are any opportunities for collaboration prior to submitting a full proposal.

Two months after the call, Applications for sea time are due.

A second call is then carried out in March/April for Supplementary applications for sea time to fill unused capacity on the vessel.

Once assessed, successful applicants are offered sea time. A voyage schedule is produced and posted on the internet one year after the initial call for applications and one year prior to the start of the voyage schedule year which operates on a financial year calendar, July to June.
