Applying for Sea Time

RV Southern Surveyor

Applications for sea time are called two years in advance of a financial year voyage schedule. The entire process involves three steps, with applicants knowing 12 months in advance of the voyage schedule if they have been successful.

There is a call for Pre-proposals and Applications for sea time in July/August.

Those considering an application for sea time have to submit a Pre-proposal which is a brief description of what is being proposed. Pre-proposals are then sent out to all applicants to allow them to see what others are proposing and to identify any opportunities for scientific collaboration prior to submitting a full application. After Pre-proposals are received, full Applications for sea time are to be submitted.

Please note that late applications will not be accepted. Following the assessment of applications, the basis of the voyage schedule is developed and applicants are advised of outcomes in March the following year.

A second call is then carried out for Supplementary applications for sea time to fill unused capacity on the vessel. Once Supplementary applications have been assessed, the final voyage schedule is produced and posted on the MNF web pages 12 months before that schedule begins.
