Exploring with the RV Southern Surveyor

On February 23, Australia's Marine National Facility RV Southern Surveyor embarked on the first leg of an 80-day assessment of seabed habitats in the Gulf of Carpentaria and Arafura Sea.

CSIRO, the National Oceans Office and Geoscience Australia have joined forces for the three-stage survey which will describe the distribution of habitat types across these waters, and their responses to different patterns of use.

Its findings will contribute to Australian Government resource and conservation management processes and the regional marine plan for northern waters between Torres Strait and the eastern Arafura Sea.
