MAPPING SEABED HABITATS OFF wEST AUSTRALIA SS07/05 Jul 05

[Introduction] [The Voyage] [The Voyagers] [Ship to shore]

The voyagers

Bob Beattie

Bob Beattie is the Voyage manager and will also be running the data acquisition computers and providing IT support.

Bob has been going to sea since 1984, first on early research vessels, such as the RV Sprightly and the RV Franklin and now on the RV Southern Surveyor. "Even over a period of 20 years 44 voyages totalling 863 days at sea, is a big hole out of one's life. But I still enjoy it," says Bob, "because of the interesting science and the occasional visits to 'exotic' ports. Never being seasick has also been a big help!"

Bob is especially interested in the results from the acoustic mapper. "This was only installed 18 months ago," says Bob, "and every time it has been used, it has turned up something new or exciting.

"It will be very hard for us to top the images of the Tongan submarine volcanoes that we mapped during voyage SS2004/11. This voyage was the highlight of my time at sea.
