Lucy Potts
Communicator
Lucy
Potts is a communication officer with CSIRO and she'll join leg
two of the Wealth from Oceans Flagship voyage on Australia's National
Marine Facility, the Southern Surveyor. Lucy joined CSIRO in early
2002 and her main focus is to help scientists tell the stories
behind their work.
"This is my first scientific expedition and I feel very
lucky. I'm looking forward to helping communicate this voyage
and two weeks without sighting land sounds wonderful, too. I grew
up on the west coast of Canada and spent a lot of time in canoes
and rowboats and on ferries, sailboats and speedboats. I never
imagined I'd spend two weeks on the Indian Ocean in a vessel kitted
for serious science."
Lucy has lived in the Canberra area for five years and prior
to that spent five years in Sydney. She will spend her 10th anniversary
of living in Australia aboard the Southern
Surveyor.
"Since I joined CSIRO I've rekindled my fascination for
science. I always enjoyed it at school and university but somehow
it never occurred to me anyone did it for a living. The scientists
I meet through CSIRO, both our people and our many collaborators,
are all so passionate about their work. They know it makes a difference
and for me it's an honour to help in any way."
From 4 to 17 August, Lucy will work aboard the Southern
Surveyor taking photos, interviewing scientists, filming and facilitating
interviews with radio journalists. She will email stories and
images back to CSIRO communicators on a daily basis and help capture
the seafaring science aboard Australia's Marine National Facility.
