South East Fishery mapping project

Project progress

ABOUT THE PROJECT

How we are doing it?

By mapping, talking to fishers and filming the bottom to depths of 350 fathoms from fishing boats with a specially built video camera.

Our methods include:

  • project staff known and trusted by fishers - including consultants who have history and regular contact with trawl and non-trawl sectors
  • ongoing discussions with contributing fishers to get their feedback. This ensures that project staff are up-to-date on any sensitivity with regard to using commercial information, and are aware of upcoming industry concerns about the project and/or the progress of proposed environmental legislation.
  • data collection in ports and at sea
  • rapid data acquisition and map-making via trackplotter data and GIS
  • explanatory data collected via questionnaire developed with industry help
  • data management (spatial and attribute) and map production facilitated by custom-designed spatial database
  • registration and strictly controlled storage of industry’s information
  • fine scale information used only with contributor’s consent
  • field sampling from industry vessels - including photography with high-tech system built as part of this project
  • value adding with other survey data (geology/ oceanography/ video)
  • detailed verification and validation procedures at all stages
  • continued involvement of industry through SETFIA + SENTA
