South East Fishery mapping project

Project progress

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Is there a need to do it?

There is a need to do it.

Fisheries managers from the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) and other organisations concerned with managing the marine environment (Environment Australia and the National Oceans Office) are bringing in a range of environmental management measures that will affect the ways in which fishers use the seabed.

Management measures are likely to include zoning, such as restricted access, no-take zones, and marine parks. To zone the seabed effectively requires good maps - and an understanding of economic as well as ecological values. We argue that fishers’ knowledge is needed to make the most informative maps. This would help management measures achieve their conservation goals while minimizing unnecessary restrictions on the fishing industry.
