The TasMAN network consists of real-time wireless sensors in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel and Derwent and Huon Estuaries. It is an instrumental component of a larger Wealth from Oceans flagship project focused on Multiple Use Management Strategy and Evaluation (MUMSE) solutions for the region.

Data from the network is transmitted back to CSIRO via acoustic and radio communications, where it is linked to real-time hydrodynamic models in order to provide detailed information on water temperature, salinity and currents. Data from benthic habitat surveys will also be integrated in the near future to provide snapshots of benthic habitats and how they change over time.

The map below identifies moored marine sensor sites (blue) and weather stations (green). Clicking on a marker will display the latest sensor readings. Currently the network consists of 3 moored sites expanding to approximately 12 during 2008/09.

The Tasmanian ICT Centre is jointly funded by the Australian Government through the Intelligent Island Program and CSIRO. The Intelligent Island Program is administered by the Tasmanian Department of Economic Development and Tourism.

Maria Island stations included as part of the free and open access arrangements for Australian Integrated Marine Observing System data, funded through NCRIS. For full access to the Maria Island data, visit the IMOS Ocean Portal.
