re: the Gosford to Lord Howe yacht race

This is the latest sea surface topography map that we have. It was made from radar altimeter measurements by US and European satellites. A high in the sea surface is analogous to a high pressure on a weather map -- currents and winds flow anticlockwise around them.

The maps, I feel, sometimes underestimate the currents and also broaden them somewhat. Expect currents of 3 knots near Smoky Cape, decreasing south- ward to 2 knots, until on the eastern side of the high where currents will be 1-2 knots. Map courtesy of Madeleine Cahill of CSIRO
