Welcome to a special service of the latest satellite sea surface temperature images for the Gosford to Lord Howe Island yacht race region. Dr George Cresswell, who outlines ocean conditions at skipper briefings each race eve, has perhaps the most comprehensive scientific knowledge of the East Australian Current - an interpretation of sea surface temperatures that can help a skipper ride one south-curling eddy or avoid the northward flow of another. Images are obtained from satellites. The heat from the earth and oceans can be detected by satellite and processed to yield sea surface temperatures, indicating the general southward movement of tropical water. Satellite sea surface temperature images With assistance from CSIRO's Remote Sensing Unit, based in Hobart, regular satellites images are being uploaded to this site until the conclusion of the race.
