Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Yacht Race

2002/3

Comments on 24 December 2002 re Pittwater to Coffs

Northward from Sugarloaf the EAC has moved out to sea a little .

The inner edge of the EAC is marked by a temperature jump up to 4 C. This edge will probably be marked also by a water colour change (from deep blue EAC to green algae-rich shelf waters), as well as a steepening of the wave structure at the current front.

Small weak eddying features appear to be carrying warm water onto the shelf south of Sugarloaf to Sydney.

Both the temperature image and the sea surface topography / inferred currents image suggest that the EAC is strong -- say 3 knots+. Current speeds change quite quickly across the EAC and this must make search and rescue operations quite a challenge..
