The rule that applies here is: keep inside the warm water to avoid a set to the south. This means not straying too far out to sea once you reach Sugarloaf, and simply gritting your teeth and putting up with a 2 knot unfavourable set when you reach Smoky Cape. The situation will improve a little north of Smoky
