Remote Sensing Project

Sydney to Southport Yacht Race

Madeleine Cahill of CSIRO Marine Research has prepared this sea surface elevation image from radar altimeter measurements from European and French/USA satellites. In addition, she has computed the ocean currents from the topography in the same way that meteorologists compute winds from pressure maps. We find that the current speeds calculated this way can be underestimated by as much as 40% and that sudden current changes can be a little smeared over. These are a result of the grid spacing of the satellite overflights. However, the current patterns are similar to what one would derive from experience applied to good cloud-free satellite infrared images.
