The biggest fleet of yachts entered in a Sydney-Hobart race departs Sydney Heads for the 50th race, an event where line honours would be contested between Brindabella and the ketch Tasmania.

The East Australian Current was sweeping southward almost to Jervis Bay. Here it feeds into two anticlockwise eddies and then into a clockwise eddy east of Bass Strait.

Tasmania took line honours seven minutes ahead of Brindabella.
