Installing a fli-format movie player
The movies on this CD/www site are stored as fli files which can be viewed using a variety of movie players. This is an old but efficient format. Nevertheless, the files are still larger (several Mbytes) than some dial-up subscribers may want to download.
You may not need to do any software installing at all, so before proceding with these installation instructions, try running one of the movies by clicking here . If garbage comes up on the screen, click the Back button, then proceed as follows, depending what sort of machine you are using:
- X11 workstation
- Download xanim , then tell your browser to use xanim to view the movies by putting a line in your .mailcap file saying video/*; xanim %s
- Macintosh
- Download Quicktime from Apple.
- PC (running Windows)
-
If your browser did not run the installer for you, do so yourself from Windows Explorer, then exit your browser and restart it by either double clicking on index.htm on the CD, or re-inserting the CD in the drive.
Now tell your computer what program to use to view fli files:
- Windows 2000/XP
- Open Windows Explorer Tools/Folder Options/File Types and type 'fli' into the list window. If you find a line associating the .fli extension with a program, click on change and choose Aawin or Quicktime from the menu (if there) or click other and find where you installed your chosen player. If you did not find a line associating the .fli extension with any program, click New and proceed.
- Windows 95/98/NT
- Open Windows Explorer View/Options/File Types and type 'fli' into the list window, which should then find a line associating the .fli extension with a program. If none is found, look for the name of the program that Windows tries to use. Click on Remove and try again to run a movie. Or you could try to Edit that entry.
To un-install either movie viewer completely from your machine, use the Add/Remove programs tool on the Control Panel.
Running a movie player
You can view each movie two ways
- by clicking on the link text while reading the documentation file ( index.htm) with a web browser. The first time you do this, your browser might ask what player to use for fli files. You can follow the prompts but its better to proceed as described above under Installing a Player.
- by selecting the movie by filename (to see the contents of the CD without activating its AutoRun feature, click only once on the CD icon then select Open from the File menu) and either
- dropping it onto the player icon
- selecting the filename from the player's file menu
- clicking on it. The first time you do this, you might be asked what player (eg aawin or Quicktime) to use for fli files, as described above.
Both methods have their pros and cons, depending on what computer and player you are using, and your own preferences.
Notes:
- The movies are made for screens with at least 1024 by 768 pixels, but you will see most of the graphics with 800 by 600.
- For faster loading of movies, copy the whole CD onto your hard drive first.
- For both players, it is best to let it play the whole movie first before doing things like stepping backwards, etc.
- If you launch movies from your browser:
- With Quicktime
- make your browser window at least 600 pixels high and 800 wide first. You might need to dispense some browser toolbars. Return to the index page by clicking the Back button
- With Waaplay
- it starts up with a small window. Resize the window first by dragging the corner down to the size of the image, then hit the play (>>) button. Depending how much memory you have, you can have several movies on screen at a time. Close (X) unneeded ones. The index page remains on screen.
