The marine environment and fisheries

• Fishing efficiency has progressed fast, but understanding of why yields vary so much has generally not. Why?

• Our knowledge of the ocean state (cf dynamics) has been completely inadequate for most fisheries applications.

• Remote sensing and data-assimilating models are changing this.

• I will now introduce a few of the new data sources, and how these are being applied to both fisheries efficiency, and yield.
