Another approach is to look for environmental variables that correlate
with how many larvae successfully return to shore. Settlement
has long been known to correlate with Fremantle sea level, both
being high in La Nina years.
Altimetry confirms that both the mean onshore flow, and
eddy variability, are greater in La Nina years.
