Local Information

Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania, is tucked in between Mt Wellington and the Derwent River. The city was established in 1804 and is saturated in colonial history. The main historical district is Battery Point, where CMAR is located. This area is characterised by colonial stone cottages, tearooms, antique shops, restaurants and pubs.
If you have the time, we would recommend that you stay over until Saturday (at least!) and visit the famous Salamanca Market.

With a daunting height of 1270 metres, Mt. Wellington is a great place to view Hobart and the surrounding land of Tasmania. Other tourist attractions include: a tour of the Cascade Brewery, gaming at Australia's first legal casino at Wrest Point, taking a cruise of the harbour, a tour the Cadburys Chocolate Factory or sampling the delights of the fudge factory at Island Produce Tasmania.

From dense cool climate rainforests to craggy mountain peaks, Tasmania's diverse wilderness sets it apart. Near to Hobart, you could visit Bruny or Maria Islands. Or further afield, destinations include Cradle Mountain and Lake St Clair, Freycinet National Park and Wine Glass Bay.
Tasmania is an island ark for many animal species that are now endangered or extinct in mainland Australia. Species such as the eastern quoll, eastern barred bandicoot and Tasmanian devil continue to survive in healthy numbers on the island state.

In the far south of Tasmania, on the Tasman Peninsula, is Port Arthur, which in the early 1800s was originally a timber station. In 1833 it became a prison settlement for male convicts, and quickly established a reputation as being "hell on earth". Today Port Arthur lies among 40 hectares of English Oaks and magnificent gardens as a memorial to Australia's convict past. One of the more popular features of a visit to Port Arthur is the Historic Ghost Tour run at night. Port Arthur is located 100km south-east of Hobart. Historic Port Arthur

Visas

Please note that all overseas visitors to Australia will require a visa or an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority).
Many of you will be able to apply for a Short Validity Business ETA - this can be organised through your travel agent or online (for some countries) at: www.eta.immi.gov.au. An ETA costs A$20 and is equivalent to a visa, but there is no stamp or label in your passport.
Alternatively, you can apply for a short-stay (business) visa. This can also be arranged when you purchase your airline ticket, or online at: www.immi.gov.au/allforms/visiting_business_short.htm. This visa will cost A$70.
Please contact Ann Gronell Thresher if you require a formal invitation to this meeting to support your visa application.

Accommodation

There are many hotels, motels and "Bed & Breakfasts" in the area. However, November is a very busy month for conferences, so many of these already only have limited availability. As such we have been unable to reserve a block of rooms in any one hotel. Instead we would ask that you book your own accommodation directly with the hotel/motel/Bed&Breakfast of your choice. Government or corporate rates may be available, although leisure rates are often cheaper for longer stays.
Given the limited availability, we would recommend that you book your accommodation soon!

(This list updated: Thursday 12 July 2007.)
For other ideas, please visit www.salamanca.com.au/accomm.

Transportation

There are no international flights direct into Hobart, so we suggest that you fly into Melbourne or Sydney. Melbourne airport is generally easier to deal with as there is only one terminal (domestic and international are co-located), there are less taxes (flights in and out of Sydney attract a noise levy!) and there is also no curfew for flights into Melbourne. Numerous flights are available each day from Melbourne (or Sydney) to Hobart, on Qantas, Virgin Blue or Jetstar.
For more information on Hobart Airport visit: www.hobartairpt.com.au.
If you provide us with your flight details when you register, we will arrange to pick you up from Hobart airport. Depending on your departure date, we may also be able arrange to take you back to the airport after the meeting.

While November is officially late Spring, the weather can be unpredictable!
According to the Bureau of Meteorology's climate statistics, the mean temperature for November are 19ºC (max) and 9ºC (min).
Forecasts and observations for Hobart can be found at: www.bom.gov.au/weather/tas/.
