MERSHIP Dataset:

Instrument or data type, or processed field
        XBT, XCTD, CTD

Location and time
lat/lon range: 'Indian Ocean', 'Tasman Sea', 'Southern Ocean'
                'North of Australia' (TOGA-WOCE lines/transects: IX1,
                                        IX9, IX12, IX22/PX11, IX28,
                                        IX29, IX30, PX2, PX3, PX30/31,
                                        PX32, PX34, PX35)

time: 1983 to present for Indian Ocean, North of Australia and
Tasman Sea, 1992 to present for Southern Ocean

Format
'raw', unedited data as indexed random access files, edited data
as both indexed random access files (1994+) and 2m reformatted
ascii files by cruise, with header lines for each profile
                (1983-present).

Media raw data on-line in various sub-directories within /home/gronell/quest, reformatted data on-line in /home/mership/archive. All data also kept on exabyte backup tapes. Filters for reading Fortran subroutine within /home/gronell/quest/ioRAsubs.F for reading raw data in full. The Reformatted data format descriptor is in file /home/gronell/reform.txt Ken Ridgway has a program to convert the Reformatted data to NET-CDF format at standard depths. Availability Reformatted data of MERSHIP cruises is available. High Density cruises (some Tasman Sea, some IX1, all Southern Ocean) are embargoed for 2 yrs from date of collection. All data is protected and may not be read by 'others' without specific permission. Most of the data has been submitted to AODC and NOAA's NODC and is available with their more general datasets, though often in lower resolution. Documentation All quality control procedures are documented in 'Quality Control Cookbook for XBT Data', R. Bailey, A. Gronell, H. Phillips, E. Tanner and G. Meyers. 1994. CSIRO Marine Laboratories Report 221. The reformatted format descriptor is in file /home/gronell/reform.txt Size Reformatted Archive - 45K, Indexed files - between 20 and 100Mb * * * * * * * * * * SEALEVEL Dataset: Instrument or data type, or processed field Sealevel Tidal information Location and time Stations: Port Moresby, Lae, Madang, Wewak, Manus, Kavieng, Alotau, Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Island, Norfolk Island, Lord Howe Island, Pelabuhan Ratu, West Coast Tasmania (Granville Harbour), Spring Bay. time: 1984 to December 1993 Format 'raw', unedited 15 minute data is held in encoded binary files. The Header information is also encoded binary, including all the patches required to create an edited version of the data. Hourly data is available in binary format and can be converted to ascii on request. Predictions for all stations are also available or can be generated as ascii files containing either the tidal extremes or the hourly predicted values. Media raw, hourly and edited data on-line in various sub-directories Filters for reading Programs exist for reading the various data formats but we would strongly suggest that anyone wanting the data refer to the National Tidal Facility which holds all of our data and has been collecting ongoing data at these stations since early 1994. Availability The data is available but the programs are unreliable. Documentation None. Original data in MEDS-ASCII format (format descriptor in file /home/gronell/quest/newGTSPP) Media raw data on-line in /home/gronell/quest/woce90 and /woce91, Filters for reading Fortran subroutine within /home/gronell/quest/ioRAsubs.F for reading raw and edited data in full. Format descriptor is in file /home/gronell/quest/newGTSPP Availability Data can be converted to MEDS-ASCII format and is generally available. Once quality controlled, it will be sent to NOAA's NODC and can also be obtained from them. Documentation All quality control procedures are documented in 'Quality Control Cookbook for XBT Data', R. Bailey, A. Gronell, H. Phillips, E. Tanner and G. Meyers. 1994. CSIRO Marine Laboratories Report 221. A further cookbook is being written to specifically define the WOCE Quality Control codes.
