ANALYSIS OF FREQUENTLY REPEATED XBT LINES

Temperature sections are analyzed using temporal optimal averaging (OA) of data, accumulated in bins along each line. Results present various statistics of sampling and variability, and describe the seasonal variation in thermal structure for the period 1983 to 1996. The interannual variation for all XBT lines has been updated to 2003, inclusive.

The presentation of each line is divided into the following sections :

  • DATA DESCRIPTION
  • MEAN AND VARIANCE ,
  • CLIMATOLOGY ,
  • INTERANNUAL VARIATION ,
  • EOF ANALYSIS.
  • Within each of the above sections, one can look at different lines simultaneously and compare the results. A table of hyperlinks allows the user to see the lines in parallel, by spawning a separate window each time a line is clicked on.

    The following lines are finished : IX-1, IX-12, IX-22/PX-11, PX-2.

The results for each line are presented separately. To look at the results for a particular line, select that line. The data for the line is presented sequentially and the flow of information is either "back" or "forward", in one and the same window.

A standard set of illustrations and tables was prepared to give an overview of the analyzed observed variables. The list of illustrations and tables  for each line is common to all lines.

A short version of this report, will be available in hard copy, as a CSIRO - Marine Laboratories Report.

The original XBT data are available at The Global Subsurface Data Centre (GSDC) , IFREMER ( Institute Francais de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer ), Brest, France, and/or at NOAA National Oceanographic Data Centre (NODC).

    NOTE:
In Netscape Communicator 4.0, several printing problems exist, including incorrect printing of images and improper alignment on the page. All images in this report are A4 format, but will be reduced if printed directly from within Netscape. To get the right format, save the GIF image to a file and then print it using (for instance) XV.
